Well, one thing to think about is that the laurel roots will not be stopped by the fence, so before planting it would be a good idea to dig a trench in front of your fence, and put in a weedproof barrier. Clematis armandii and cirrhosa are brilliant as they can be pruned back if you feel they are getting too big. Armandii is also fragrant and flowers in the winter. Evergreen cover for bare, north-facing fence.
