Hello, can anyone give a name to these things I've been finding all over the garden?
They have a tough stem with nobbly bits on and a thick white root:

Could we have a photo from the side that shows the base Vic?
I agree that it's the common elder - looking at the new shoots, the leaves there are laying about on the soil surface and the look of the stem when you zoom in on it.
I find the hemlock family have more finely cut leaves and they branch differently. .

Yes, elder - are there any elderberry bushes in nearby hedgerows? They self-seed easily - of course, they also travel courtesy of blackbirds and their droppings.
I can't see any hedges nearby - it's all fenced up around here but maybe there's a rogue bush somewhere...
I was going to blame the birds though
