Hi i have been trying to redifine the lawn edges, the problem is they are so dry that the edges are just not looking very defined. The soil is fine and ph is about 7, south facing.
Has anyone got any ideas.
Water them first or wait until it has rained a lot
Do you have a gully, usually around two inches deep and three or four wide, fill it with water and let it soak in then with a very sharp edging tool (half moon shaped) and a long plank redefine the edges. The cutter must be sharp or else you push the soil down. Letting the edges grow for a while will put roots into the edge making it firmer. If you are using a spade often not sharp enough then you are again compressing the edge instead of a clean cut. A strimmer on its side will also cut an edge but wear goggles doing it.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have a half moon cutter will try soaking and give it another go.
If you want to spend the money you can edge your lawn with metal edging strips (but not that horrible corrugated plastic, yuk!) You see it in National Trust gardens etc where there's a lot of footfall, and it makes it easy to mow right over the edge without breaking it. But that makes your lawn size & shape permanent, which would drive me nuts - I always need more space for some plant or other...
There is also Smartedge, a black plastic strip that I use - makes a superb edge which you don't see.
