Digging in slug eaten lettuce

hi there,
Have managed to get some good results with healthy lettuce - only trouble is I didn't eat any of it! Slugs have therefore had a go at most of them. I'm now thinking as the butterheads are starting to go to seed, and the web's wonderful have started to rot, the icebergs are covered in slug holes, should I cut off the roots and dig in the leaves where they were growing? There's no obvious signs of disease, so it should be a good idea?

If you want to plant straight away, I would put them on the compost heap, mixed up with other stuff.
