Small clear resin-like drop on plum fruits

My plum tree fruits have small, clear, resin-like drops on them, any idea what could be causing this? See picture below.

Aphids pierce the fruit and it exudes a resin.

It's resin!  The tree produces it as a defence and to help heal itself.  It's the tree equivalent of a human scab.  As fidgetbones said, the most likely cause is that bugs pierced the skin of the fruit.

Hi, I'm fairly certain that peach borer only occurs in the USA and Australia etc - I haven't heard that it's a problem in the UK and can't find reference to it having arrived here ....

So that's one less thing to worry about image
