My mums camelia has no buds and the leaves are turning yellow-brown. Any ideas on what this could mean? any advice appreciated.
Could be suffering from soil that is not acid enough. Try a feed of sequestered iron, which should green up the leaves. Flower buds form in the previous summer, so you won't get any this year. Make sure it doesn't go short of water next August - that is when it will be making flowers for next spring. Hope this helps.
As chicky has said - they form their buds during late summer and shouldn't be short of water at that time. Bearing in mind the hot summer last year perhaps they were a bit thirsty. Frosts at this time of year can affect foliage, especially if it's sited where it gets early morning sun, but since we've had a mild winter it's unlikely. Cold winds can also cause browning though, so perhaps that has caused the discolouration.
I agree with drought in late summer. As has been said , it hinders bud formation on camellias and also plants like Agapanthus.
Thank you all for your advice. Mum is putting it down to planting it in the wrong position where it has been hit by frost and early morning sun. We live and learn!
