Asparagus

My asparagus are sprouting already! Is this normal for this time of year and how tall/thick do I let them grow before cutting. Should I let them continue to grow rbprune back? They are old enough to take first harvest this year.

    Gosh, you're lucky - no sign of mine yet. Recommended wisdom is that you take finger thick spears when they are about 6 - 8  inches high. You can also cut the very thin  shoots ('sprue' I think they're called) to eat chopped up in salads.

    Mine isn't showing either.  Let us know how big a crop you get mine consistantly produces very little I 'm thinking some of my crowns have died.

    @biofreak Well done. Envious.
    When we had our first garden (the one we are still in) we planted asparagus. We had a great crop for many years and then.....nothing.
    We have over the last 2 years have had a "rogue" one growing in a totally different place and have been able to harvest a few modest stems.
    Nothing better than having them so fresh.

    I planted 4 crowns a few weeks ago but nothing is showing yet 😞 
    I’ve also planted a packet of seed (maybe 10 seeds) they’ve been in 4 weeks now and still no signs of anything.  Not sure what I’ve done wrong with the seeds, I planted chillis at the same time and sweet peppers since and had great germination rates 😞

    Checked today and some asparagus are  just showing through - so excited!

    I have had problems growing it, I planted about a dozen crowns 2 years ago, only a handful ever appeared, and they grew very tall like grass, this year I decided to try again, I even turned the plot over where the original stuff was planted, and found little trace of them. So now I purchased 9 crowns, six of one variety and 3 of another, when I opened the plastic bags they came in some had shoots, but the shoots just came off, I have planted them anyway, but in a different position, I have dug down and added good compost and rotted manure a few weeks before planting so here hopes, fingers crossed.

    Shared the first spear last night!! Yummy. Not sure if this helps but I planted mine in a Raised Bed with loads of sand incorporated in compost as French have great success growing just in sand adding washed seaweed as the nutrient.
