Plants mysteriously dieing

hi, i hope someone has some ideas to help me.

in two distinct patches plants, including trees, shrubs and underplanting, including the hedge and lawn have mysteriously died.  this process has taken a matter of 3 weeks, we have ruled out gas, water and sewage and electricity, we used no pesticides either.

Plants which have died include the lawn, hedge (rhodendron) hydrangea chrinodendrons, snake bark maple amongst others.  This was an established shrubbery of many years standing.  we would be glad of any suggestions of what has caused this and what action we should take to stop other plants being effected.

Many thanks

How deep is the soil underneath that patch of grass, could it be on a rock line?

  • How strange. Looks like glyphosate weedkiller to me. You've not fallen out with your neighbours have you?

Has your neighbour got an oil tank behind the hedge?  Leaking kerosine will kill most plants...

  • Thank you for answering, there is a good depth of sandy loam..at least 3ft.

We wondered if the council had weedkiller along the road, awaiting a response from them.  We are on friendly terms with all neighbours  so that is not an issue.

We are on mains for gas here, though house used to be the coach house to neighbouring one so an oil/petrol tank could be a possibility

If it’s not you with the weed killer..eg left In watering can etc..

Then if it were me I’d probably be looking to contact a specialist, more to rule out anything particularly bad!

Suspect that’ll cost a bit though

It looks as though the top of the tree next to the conifer has not been affected.  That seems to suggest it was something airborne that didn't reach the top.

Or something in the soil that hasn’t reached the top yet 🤔

Just a thought but do the neighbours have a hot tub or similar? Has anyone allowed the water and/or cleaning stuff to drain into the area behind the hedge? I’ve seen similar damage to a garden on an American tv programme.

I see an old electric post in a background, how far/close is that? Sometimes old posts leak out stuff in ground including electricity. You may want to check on leaking stray voltage. It may even travel by metal elements like pipes and concrete posts with metal wiring  that are nearby the leak. So I’d check area around and see if damage spreads towards the post and if so call utility service as soon as you can .
