raised beds around a pear tree

Hello, 
we have recently moved house and i am trying to figure out what to do with our east facing garden!! 
one side of the garden gets sun all day and a pear tree is planted there, my plan is to have a fruit and veg patch there also. 
I am hoping to build raised beds along the side that gets the sun which will mean the pear tree is inside the beds, but am I able to put the compost around the tree trunk to what ever height i build the beds to, or will this rot the trunk? or am i best to build a little square around the trunk to keep any compost off it?

    Keep the compost away from the tree bark. You're absolutely right that it would rot the trunk if you raise the soil level around it.
    Maybe build beds either side of the tree. If the beds are above the tree's roots, you might find that roots grow up into the beds. I'm not sure whether putting membrane in the bottom would stop it, but worth a try if you can't leave the root area clear.
