Clematis - Fence Growing Questions

Paul165Paul165 Posts: 97

Hi guys

I have fixed some vine eyes and wires to the wooden fence - there are three wires, horizontal, 45cm between each wire.  The first is 40cm from the ground.  It is about 1.8m wide and 2m high in total.  My questions are:

1. Do I only plant one clematis, or should I be planting 2/3 next to each other for better coverage; and

2. Should I plant the clematis (assuming one plant only) in the middle of the wired area, training in both directions or should I plant one/both on either end of the wire, and train from there?

Thanks for your help

It depends on the clematis you choose.
You only have about 6 feet in width. One carefully chosen Group3 clematis can easily fill that, especially if new growth is trained and tied in.
It depends on what else you have around it, and what look you want to achieve.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
