Carrots not playing ball!!!

Any ideas?!

    Which variety are they?  Looks like they are not keen on the soil they have been grown in.  Carrots don't need much in the way of nutrients and don't like rich/manured soil which makes them fork like that.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    A couple of things it could be, the first would be the seed, what type are they? Some are naturally short or even round!

    Second thing is compaction. can you easily poke a stick/trowel handle into the soil at least 8 inches? carrots will stop growing down and start going out if they can't get down easily.

    The other issue you have there with the split is just due to inconsistent water, i.e a dry spell and then lots of rain. You can help prevent it by picking them a bit earlier and smaller, but it will still happen after heavy rain.
