Vegetables in Containers

Hi all,

Please can you advise me on the best soil matter for vegetable seeds in containers? I know "summer" is passing us by but I am hoping to sow some radishes, spring onions, lettuce, carrots and dwarf french beans as soon as somebody will be kind enough to help me out here.

So, I have a huge bag of multi-purpose compost and a small bag of seed and cuttings compost,  perlite and a quarter bag of grit and lots of polystyrene for the bottom of pots (If it really does work or needed)?  Is there anything I can do with what I have or do I have to buy different soil? and also do I plant them in separate containers now so they grow in containers from start to finish or do I plant together in a tray or big pot and then repot when (or if) they are baby plants?

Any advice on this would be kindly appreciated.

Thank you

The MPC is fine to use , as is the others mixed in with it. I dont put anything  in the bottom of the tubs just good draining holes.
Its definitely a bit late for seeds,  but it is possible with some of those mentioned. You need a container the size of a garden tub ( the kind you plant bedding plants in) one tub for french beans( plant two seeds together ) , at most in three points across the tub (6 seeds) if no sign of life plant two more after two weeks . You should have just about time to fit in a harvest.
As for lettuce, radishes both should be fine in tubs.
The spring onions I would save till next year as its cutting it fine.
Keep all well watered  and watch the pesky pigeons don't get them.

    Hi Phillipa,

Thank you for your reply, I haven't long since been in from planting in between going to sainsburys, hoovering .... and cooking dinner so I think I can safely say that I'm a multi-tasker. I planted some radishes too! First time for me I'm a virgin veggie grower ... hic.. on second glass of prosecco.. can you tell? lol

Did you see Gardeners World this week @flowerbomb21 . Monti was planting veg for a late crop in a small area.
