Aphids or what ?

I have 2 tubs of violas on my patio growing strongly until this week. Then suddenly all the plants in one of the tubs wilted and died.
As I was pulling out the dead plants I came across the usual slugs and snails, but in addition the soil was covered by thousands of what look like very tiny (1/10 mm or so) greenish aphids.
Are these indeed aphids? Is the other tub likely to suffer too.
There are a lot of aphids in my garden this year, mainly on the roses, but I've seen
nothing like this before.
