Acer - some branches not budding, plus mis-coloured bark

Hi,
Under advice we pruned our Acer (Skeeters Broom) this winter, maybe it's just a coincidence or perhapes related, but 3 branches don't appear to be budding this spring, two of them have mis-coloured bark too.
Does this mean these branches are now dead and beyond hope?  Anyone know what the cause might be, and whether we should quickly remove them, or maybe leave them for a while?

Thanks
Mark

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.

  • I decided to cut off the biggest affected branch with a clean saw, and this is a photo of the cross section.

I think the dark-ish area top-left of centre is darker...

I'm no expert on such matters I'm afraid.
I can only say that when I chopped a branch from my tree the black rings were obvious, there are no black rings on yours - hopefully it'll be OK.
