Fruit trees at Aldi

Hello all, just a message to alert you that if you're in the market for fruit trees Aldi have a good selection at the moment all £9.99. I noticed them yesterday when I went shopping.

As part of our redesign of the garden we've made more space for fruit and veg. I wanted to get some bare root trees to plant along the fence but they were out of stock online wherever I looked.

Anyway they had the pear I wanted - "Concorde". I also bought a "Stella" - Cherry Tree and a "Victoria" plum.

They had some other varities of those fruits and also some apples.

They came with a bag of compost around the roots and a stake.

    Just check the shape of them first. Sometimes they are partly trained mis shapes.

    That was the good thing about getting them there instead of ordering online, I was able to check through them and pick the most suitable ones.

    I bought 2 apple trees cox and golden delicious pear tree conference sweet cherry tree and a Victoria plum tree in b&m 4.99 each last week.. does anybody know if these bear fruit the first year and they don’t tell you how old they. I have been growing 2 gala apple trees from seeds for the past 5-6 years and still waiting to bear fruit as I planted in the ground as pot was to small I thought it stunt the growth I can’t seem to find any posts if the aldi and b&m fruits trees bear fruit in the first year many thanks gemma

    @gemsy123 - it depends how old the tree is, and whether it has fruiting Spurs or not. If when you look at the branches of the tree you can see buds that are sticking up away from the branch then those will open to flowers and potentially fruit.

    Mine did on all of the trees but I've pruned most of them off when shortening the sideshoots.

    If it's a young tree, and you're just planting it then allowing it to bear fruit may take too much energy out of it when it hasn't had chance to fully establish yet.

    so it may be best to remove the flowers (but not the spurs) for the first year or so.

    these are most likely grafted so they will mature and bear fruit much quicker than ones started from seed.

    Thankyou for your reply yes they are grafted and have lots of buds and beaches with lots of buds.. 1 of the apple trees has lots of green age on it when I bought it.. I still think the gala trees need to mature more although it does suffer from white mildew and leaf curl I am thinking of re-digging it out and moving it as is is near lots of other trees and shrubs. The trees I recently purchased do look more mature and a thicker base wasn’t quite sure the age of when they sell the grafted trees Thankyou for your reply gemma

    Hi just wondering how you got on with the trees? I am waiting for them to come into stock on Thursday and hoping to get a cherry and plum to grow in large pots. The blurb states they grow to around 160cm so should be ideal for pots?

    Last time I bought the it said what rootstock they were on. They weren't especially dwarfing rootstocks if I recall correctly. Quince A, Colt MM106 etc. The 160cm may refer to the size of the tree at sale!

    The Cherry and plum were fine. I've moved them to my allotment. The pear died. Was my own fault for not taking it straight back when I saw how damaged the roots were.

    Won't stop me going on Thursday to get another if its there! Will just keep receipt this time and not plant it if there's anything wrong.

    Just be careful that you are buying make sure the variety it says on the ticket is correct,because I have been stung twice with the ticket saying it were  brambly apple trees which turned out to be two different varieties all together they taste alright raw but don't cook very well.I complained at the supermarket I got them from but got no joy they said I had taken pot luck with buying them,in other words tough.

    I bought a stella cherry tree today too! Its decent size .. can I ask how your going to plant it? I'm thinking of potting it in a container and keeping it outside - will it handle this weather? Also, do you think they will fruit this year? Sorry I'm new to fruit trees! Thanks.
