Possible disease?

Hi, does any one recognise this problem on our birch trees please?

    Without knowing more about your trees my first thought is that the tree shown may be heading towards the end of its life and the aging trunk has become susceptible to fungal attack ... all part of the natural scheme of things ... but I’m just a gardener and not a tree expert ... someone else may know better ...

    I'm not a tree expert either, but google came up with 'white crust lichen' which looks similar. I found a pic here no idea if that's what it is though..
    Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
    Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

    I think Lichen and moss but more photos would give a clearer pic of what's happening.

    Ah ... yes White lichen ... I’d forgotten about that ... told you I’m not a tree expert ... love lichens and should’ve remembered that tho ... obviously too early in the morning and not enough caffeine on board ... sorry if I alarmed you :flushed:

    It does look to me like a lichen.
