It can become a big old thug, but it's easily pruned and comes back well so can by kept in check to the required size.

I leave mine for a few years then give it a major chop. It tends to look more natural,IMHO, than the annual hair cut blobby look.

He's young and impressionable at the moment so when the time comes, I will explain that it's not him that I dislike, but his behaviour.
