Bird Netting - be aware
in Fruit & veg
As I still haven't managed to make a proper fruit cage this year, I bought some fine black plastic netting from our local garden centre to cover my summer raspberries that were being eaten by birds.
On checking the row this afternoon I was horrified to find a young hen blackbird caught in the mesh tight around her neck. I managed to snip the mesh away and put her under nearby bushes where I was relieved to see she was later foraging. I don't know how long she'd been there but If I hadn't checked today it could have been a very different story.
THEREFORE.... if you are using this fine plastic mesh please be aware it can be a lethal trap for birds and check it regularly.
I for one won't be using this stuff again and will look for a heavier knotted net for fruit coverage.
