    Well, it is a Persicaria, and so is Japanese knot weed!  Was it there last year or are you new to the garden.  JKW would probably be emerging in other parts of the garden too as it is a great spreader.  The other garden worthy species tend on the whole to be more clump forming. Time will tell......

    Agree, one of the Persicarias. Dozens of different named ones these days.
