Compost question

Hi

i made a compost bin out of old pallets about a year ago and have had some compost out of it, would it be better to cover it over the winter period say with old carpet or leave it open ???,or would it make no difference????..just thinking about it getting to wet.

cheers Kevin.

The general advice with all compost heaps is to cover, a) To keep excess water out, b) to keep any heat generated in. This speeds up the composting process and makes it more thorough too.

Iain is right, but if you don't cover it, it will rot down eventually anyway, especially if you turn it from time to time.

You do need some moisture for the bacteria to function and you also need air so, if you can, turn what's left in there, water it or let it be rained on for a day or two and then cover it to keep in the heat and speed up the process.
