Why is sandstone rich soil acidic?

    It is not always. In mansfield area, the bunter sandstone tends to be near neutral.  The acidity or otherwise depends on what rocks were originally broken down to make the sand. Some sand has a lot of shells in it, the calcium makes it more alkaline.
