Cherry fly maggots
Hi. Has anyone had experience of this in the UK? My cherry tree has had an enormous crop this year but all of it is now infested with tiny maggots. From what I've read (mostly US-based) this isn't going to be easy to get rid of as the larvae then bury into the ground beneath the tree before emerging as flies next year to continue the cycle. I'd never even heard of them before. And I don't even want to think about how many I've already eaten!
I am devastated as this tree has rarely produced a decent crop and now it looks like game up unless I'm prepared to drench it in pesticides every spring from now on.
Can anyone help?
