I have a few roses which are way too tall.a couple of them are very thick at the bottom, almost like a tree trunk. How should I go about pruning these? Thanks
Do you know what type of roses those tall ones are? If they are getting in the way then most roses will happily regenerate if you cut them back to about knee height although on some types you will lose flowers for this year.
No idea, sorry. The previous owner planted them. All I know is the flowers are red! I don't mind losing flowers for a year, just wasn't sure whether they could regrow from such a thick trunk.
Have you thought about pegging them?
to peg them you take the long canes that are growing and either tie them back down to the round or to the plant itself. Roses love to be pegged and you will get a better shape for your rose and a lot more flowers from the pegged canes.
you could also just prune some of the older woody canes out to improve the shape.
Thanks for that suggestion, I've never heard of pegging. Sounds interesting, i'll look it up.
