The RHS always knows.
The native small-leaved lime is a really good tree for wildlife, and is the one which is traditionally pleached - good choice
Hornbeam is also good. You haven't said how tall you want it, but I've seen Pyracantha grown as a small one. Apart from being evergreen it's good for wildlife
Good luck!
Wouldn't want to be up a ladder dealing with pyracantha. Bad enough with feet on the ground. If pruned to tight shape you won't see many berries
There are 2 I see on my way to work that are pruned as small pleached hedges ~ 4 foot. Both grow flowers and berries. I am currently training one along wires up the side of a brick shed after seeing the one at York Gate on a GW programme. Garden gloves and long sleeves work pretty well.
Extreme gardening gets the adrenalin pumping!
Praps I'm getting too old and feeble quercus. I keep looking at ways to make it less painful.
thanks all think am going to go with the small leaved lime or hornbeam as its going to be about 8 - 10 ft.
Rick, how long is your hedge?
