One plant border - ideas please

I have an unusual border in front and to the side of of my house. It's around 2 foot deep with a path to its front and a combination of house wall/sunken patio and another flower bed on the other side closest to the house. I am usually a fan of cramming as much in as possible but I want something simple. My soil is stoney clay and I don't want anything higher than two feet as it will effect outlook over garden from house and from patio. Part of the border is south facing the other half sits in shade as it go round the side of house which is sheltered by a hedge. Here's what I don't want Lavender - not well drained enough Cat mint - got a lot in another border that sits adjacent Peony - all over garden Sedum - plenty! Has anyone got any ideas?

I've gone through your suggestions verdun. I think it's clarified that I want something floriferous though I did like the pittosporum. Hebes don't do well for me as we are in a frost pocket but I like them too. So of the suggestions the santolina, perovskia and hemerocallis (although I prefer a non variegated variety) stand out the most. I'm not sure santolina will like my soil as it isn't particularly well drained, I have a lot of cat mint in the border next door and I think Russian sage is such s similar colour that puts me off...
