If you click on the small downwards arrow beside the smiley face, it will open up a box of lots of emoticons. If you hover your mouse above them but don't click, I get a small box of text that opens at the bottom of my screen which gives you a clue as to what they are all supposed to mean.

Blushing (eg embarrassed.)
Unsure (eg how did that happen?)
Referring to a comment above or rolling eyes (as in 'I knew that would happen!)
Referring to a comment above and probably disagreeing.
Referring to a comment above and strongly disagreeing.
Any of the above 3 can also be used as in "looking up at the heavens."
"Erm, I really didn't expect that!" or weird.
same as ?
Verdun (eg I might not have really meant what I wrote)
Verdun in a different mood!
I shall say nothing!

Happy and carefree (as if on holiday)

Yes, they have multiple interpretations depending on which forums you've used before. Different folk can use them differently so the real answer is: "it depends!"
Then again, some people don't get a toolbar, so then you have to use colon, semi colon and the bracket.
there are hundreds on the iPad, none of them work on this site, just come out as a row of question marks.
