I recently layered my back garden with over a ton of sand to level it for flags. The other half decided she wants grass instead. Can I lay turf over the top of sand?
When the grounds were remodelled at my old place of work the central lawn was returfed over sand. It took quite a long while before it was firm enough to walk on, but it's turned into a good lawn.

The turf has soil in it, the sand has soil underneath it, the roots will pass through the sand to the soil below, worms will travel back and forth between the two and the sand will be amalgamated with the soil - it won't be a permanent layer.
How thick is the layer of sand?
