I put a couple of Apricot stones in a pot in my porch a couple of years ago. This week they have germinated I don't know what to do with them now though! Can I plant them in the garden end of May? Thank you x
I think I'd grow them on in pots for a while before planting them out. I grow shrubs and trees from seed and don't plant them out for at least a year, often more
Nutcutlet, yes it is exciting, I am thrilled! Will do as you suggest then, keep them in a pot until summer 2016 maybe. Thank you x
The problem you will have is that most trees are grown on a rooting stock, yours won't be so it could be huge. And you have no idea about the variety. Chances are it is unsuited to the UK, and most apricots are not really for the UK.
If your garden is huge, then go for it, if you want to experiment. If you want a tree for fruit, I'd buy a tree on a dwarf rooting stock. If money is right, Aldi and Lidl sometimes have excellent deals, as I think do Wilko.
Have fun growing it.. maybe turn it into a fun conservatory/green house plant. As LeifUK said, probably not worth growing it if you're just in it for fruit.. but would be more like starting an avocado stone.
I'd grow it in a pot to see how it goes. That way you can move it to protect from the worst of the cold weather next winter and will get an idea about it's growth rate. Blue Onion's idea of using it as a conservatory/house plant is a good one.
Thank you all for your comments I think it is going to be a houseplant. I am not really bothered whether it fruits or not, we have a plum and damson tree in the garden already. I am just delighted it has germinated x
Hi Beany going towards 18 month's ago when we bought our bungy erein Norfolk I saved the stones from the first plums we ate off a very sickly looking plum tree in our new garden, about 3 weeks ago to my surprise 2 nice shoots appeared, now 4 inches high and looking very sturdy, I think i will also save them and see how they fare just for fun, the tree after some tlc is now doing ok as well good luck
Alan thats great! The germination fairy has visited both of us then lol! My apricot shoots are about 4" too. Fingers crossed we both do well. x
