I am sure you are right Fif2 - it is a hollyhock. I would take it out of the pot and plant it in the garden, with either a tall, stout stake to tie it to, or against a wall, or trellis for support. We have a windy garden here, so we tie our hollyhocks to stakes, you may not need to. Most hollyhocks are perennial or biennial and grow to 6 or 8 ft tall, flowering in mid summer.
