Climbing roses companion plants
i have a lovey narrow border which has lots of climbing roses, Clematis and honeysuckle along it. In the spring it has low lying bulbs that come up underneath but I am after suggestions as to what to grown under the roses et al during the season now- there is lots of creeping Jenny which I like but it is looking a bit monotonous. The garden is very much a cottage garden so something English without maintenance would be great. Any suggestions?

You can't go wrong with Nepetas (Catmint) and Alchemilla Mollis. These plants are the perfect foil for roses. Lavender and Penstemons if your garden is not too exposed since Penstemons may not over-winter if your garden reaches -5. Other more garden worthy lower mound forming plants are Diascias in a multitude of colours. Saponaria (Soapwort) is also a lovely cottagey type plant, some complain it can be invasive, but it's just been given a bad name. It is not anymore weedy than other plants.
