Identifying a rose

Hello

Can anyone help identify the rose in the photos.  These were my grandparents and we think the plants are over 70 years old.   Any help appreciated.  Regards helenimageimageõ

Almost impossible to say, so many red roses over the years, however, the bloom form and foliage, plus the shape of the bush, I could not rule out 'Alec's Red'... released in 1970 and if planted about that time, makes it around 47 years old, if that's old enough...   it's one I've grown myself and has always been a popular variety available everywhere, so likely planted in many gardens from that period..

Here's a photo of a bloom... which is not dissimilar to yours..

Thank you for your reply.  The roses are older than that from family knowledge.  Anywhere that keeps records of old roses knowledge?

Identifying roses when taken too close is hard because the leaves and shape also helps, plus if it is not a climber/rambler, even more harder. Then, it's red too! What is the rough height. It looks quite short from the picture...

    Hi,

I encountered the Historic Roses Group at a flower show last year and they offered to help me ID two roses in my garden. It took a bit of time but they were super helpful and I did find out what my roses were.

    Good Luck

Some more information is always helpful, like a photo of the whole bush for instance, it's a tall order to guess at red roses otherwise, however, in this case, and as it has a strong scent, I would suggest 'Papa Meilland' as a possibility... bred 1963 and always popular...
