Mahonia in container

Can I plant a mahonia in a container I have been given one and have not got a suitable space in the garden I would be grateful for any advice

    You could start it in a pot but they get quite large and have strong roots they like to send deep so it won't be happy for more than a few years.

    They get very big and very prickly I don't think pots will really work.

     I replaced one last year which had been in the wrong place for years. It took too big men  a very long time to get the roots out. They are lovely though,  the birds love them.
