Weed identification if poss please...

image

Hello.

Im trying to rid this creeping weed from my garden but have no idea what it is. Very deep rooted and sends out smaller suckers from which new weeds take root.

Any help identifying much appreciated.

Best,

D

    Potentilla reptans, cinquefoil.

And it's difficult to distinguish it from some of the cultivated types of Potentilla.  I had a nice red one and was happy when I thought it had self seeded.  Until the 'self seeded' ones were yellow... and spread and spread!

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    Creeping cinquefoil.

The long black taproots aren't easy to remove in one go but repeatedly digging them up will eventually kill it off but will take some time.

If it's growing through cracks in paving, it could be a nightmare to erradicate without resorting to a chemical approach or very frequent removal of foliage, which again would take a long time.
