Hi Kate. One point - weeds ARE plants. image Weed is a word used rather indiscriminately to descibe wild plants growing where they are not wanted by some gardeners. I think your plant is some form of tree seedling - it looks rather like Cherry to me. It maybe a sucker from a Cherry root. Have you any Cherry trees growing nearby?

Hi Kate. I think that could be the culprit. I am assuming that these suckers are growing near (ish) to the main tree. All you need to do is just remove all of those suckers right down to ground level and keep an eagle eye open as they will probably pop up again. I had a Cherry tree cut down in my garden about 10 years ago and I still get suckers from its roots that were left underground.

thank you ladybird4 I will follow your advise! Have now noticed the growth is coming from a stump which was probably the main tree.

Excellent Kate. Just hack them all off and if you can get a little bit below the soil surface when you do the cutting, so much the better.
