Unidentified tree/shrub

Wheelie1Wheelie1 Posts: 10

Having recently moved I have what looks like 2 plants intertwined growing in my front garden. I don't know what they are or what I can do to them. I would like to cut them back. Can anyone offer me some advice on what they might be and how best to manage them. One appears tree like and looks like it has been cut down before. The other has needle like thorns. image

I thought Pyracantha for the jaggy one Hosta. Is the foliage not a bit rounded for Berberis?  image

Leaf shape OK for some of the berberis, I think the leaf arrangement is berberis rather than pyracantha
