Diverting downpipe to water butt

I removed the pipe connecting the downpipe to the water butt in order to tip out all the gunge that was blocking it. Now I find it impossible to get the pipe back on to the diverter - any suggestions please! I have been trying this for over a week but not successful. I have tried immersing the end of the pipe in hot water, smearing where the pipe fits on to the diverter with grease but so far no luck. I have done this many times in the past without a problem but mainly at the back of the house. This time it's at the front which faces south. In case the pipe has become brittle in the sun, I have ordered a new metre of pipe but this yet to be delivered having been on order since the end of April. Would a new length of pipe solve the problem?
