Please identify and how do I get rid of it?

hi everyone

im just wondering if anyone knows what this pesky plant/weed is? It's been on my driveway since last year and I've tried lots of ways to get rid of it but it seems to grow like wildfire . It's roots are enormous if that helps identify it?

any help on this would be most appreciated.

Sorry, but it survived the ice age.

Roots have been recorded 300m, yes, three hundred metres below ground.

As weeds go, I don't find it too much of a problem.

Just pull it up when you see it and you can keep it under control.

the best weedkiller is a stainless steel hoe.

Field Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) - an absolute thug of thugs.

One of the most ancient plants on the planet and the reason why (as Hostafan indicated) is because of the roots. It is nigh on impossible to dig deep enough to get them out.

You can hoe down any shoots as soon as they appear but it will take several years to deplete the energy reserves in its rhizomes.

If you want to tackle it with weedkiller, don't bother spraying with glyphosate weedkiller as it will usually just drip off as Horsetails have a silica coating to deter herbivores from eating them. You can bruise the stems beforehand to improve the weedkiller uptake but it doesn't kill them off. There are products specifically available for this weed but they're not cheap and you really need to take care when using them as they're agricultural products. Best left to a pro.
