Caterpillar cause of plant withering?

Hi all, looking through the family garden and I've noticed a few of the plants are withering away. Upon closer inspection I see multiple of these little catarpillers (see picture). I was wondering if they are the cause of the problem. They have infested each affected plant and leave behind a silky web material. I'm no expert gardener so please forgive if it is stupid a question.
Any thoughts?

That looks like Box Tree Caterpillar. We had it last year, but not too bad, and the plants have fully recovered. I believe the best treatment is to remove them by hand.
