Need help/advise on a design for my back garden.

Hi everyone,

New around here as I've recently brought a property where I have a small sized North facing garden which I really want to do something with. Any ideas/help welcome even if it includes making/building something as I've always enjoyed that.

I'll post a pic of it below :)

Thanks in advance,

Alfie.

I would go city/courtyard garden, hard paved, with well planted borders around it - substantial shrubs and climbers to the fences to disguise the boundary (which should be painted to tone it down) and help screen the neighbors. A courtyard focal point for eating out. That's just me though!

  • Thanks for the advise. So just straight up remove the grass and replace with slabs?

It's up to you! Think about it first. If I had kids I might want to keep the lawn for a bit, for example. Pavingexpert.com is a fantastic resource for hard landscaping if you do want to go that way. My advice is look at pictures of gardens you like and draw inspiration from those, but be realistic with what will work in a small space.

Hi on GW Monty Don planted two roses and a hydranga good for north facing walls. Might be an idea for covering the fencing.

not sure if they are your thing but apparently they grow well in shade. Nice to have a blank canvas! image

Hi Alfie, how exciting to have such a lovely blank canvas, new shed and good looking boundaries.  Is the pink slide a clue that you have a little one or two?  Would you like to have a design that you and kids can enjoy? Is there a style you lean towards to? You say you can build stuff but will you enjoy maintaing the planting side of things?

i would personally keep the grass esp if you have a child? much nicer playing on grass than slabs, I would look at verical gardening, having climbers up the fence, they give beautiful flowers, and would help your local wildlife too.

You can also get little hanging pots which i just love ( i have them on m fence) which if you fill with cascading lobelia is really pretty and provides lots of colour, is easy to maintain too just a wee water at night is all they need (if that if its already rained)

I also love raised beds with bulbs multilayered, easy to do, and is very little maintenance but provides flowers for most of the year, when one is dying back the next is coming through and flowering :)

    good luck and have fun!

This is amazing, thank you. Yeah I have a little one who is nearly 3 years old. Of course I'd like for her to enjoy the garden but she loves the idea of growing things (already has strawberries on the go etc) with us so its more getting things in place to make the garden look nicer. I think I like the idea of having climbers on the fence (have now painted) and flower beds maybe down both sides (left and right) with removing the slabs on the right. So it would be flower beds along the sides and grass in the middle. Patio to be left by the shed where I can do a table and chairs maybe. I do things like get crates and break them up and build raised beds, have two in that shed I need to get out ;) Thanks for your advice, what do you tihnk.
