Pruning salix

i have a Salix tree that is about 10 years old and I have had to prune it right back because it was not looking very healthy.lots of dead wood and not many leaves.
just wondered if I may have damaged it by pruning it at this time of the year.

If it's already got dead wood and few leaves you can't make it worse. Which Salix is it?
