They are alliums but difficult to say which as I can't judge the size. If they are smallish then they could be chives which have red-ish buds before they open to a purple flower.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
Thanks BobTheGardener! this is really helpful- will start looking up and researching more about alliums and chives in particular- i remember purple flowers from last year, so hopefully will have some more this year.

Look like chives to me too Bob. Lovely with scrambled egg.
Chives grow between 8 - 16" tall, depending on conditions.

Does it smell a bit like onions if you break a strand of it, if so you can eat the flowers as well as the stalks, they look lovely on a salad.
