Could the new stems coming up be cutting off sap etc of the old leaves. It happens to a number of other plants Tomato side shoots coming out of the stems for example. Just an idea.
Reminder to self to plant the rhubarb plant I bought three weeks ago .
I am lucky to live up in Cheshire. We have had a bit more rain than those further south. We are under cloud today but not a great likelihood of useful rain.
At least the sun and wind will not be drying out the soil so much as over the last few days. Our soil is very sandy and can start blowing about. I will have to go and buy more "soil improver" compost.

Have been watering at night as we haven't had any rain for ages
