Pieris, Forest Flame

I have a number of Piers Forest Flames in my garden and all of them seem to be infected, on the leaves, with what appears to be a black deposit. This easily rubs off but the plants generally look to be wilting.
Can anyone help to remove this problem?

I had the same on my new pyracantha, think it is a fungus that grows on aphid honeydew-are there any tiny aphids on the plants or ants running up and down? I washed it off with very diluted soapy water and blasted the plant with a hose to get rid of the bugs. It seems fine now.
