Clematis Montana
in Fruit & veg
My clematis was falling off the trellis last year. On heaving it back up, some stems got damaged but it's hard to identify which ones.
It's finished flowering now.
What would happen if I gave it a brutal prune?
How much growth could I expect this year and would I get any flowers next year?
In London. Keen but lazy.

Early flowering clematis like Montana can be pruned after flowering. And cutting it hard back will be fine. You should still get flowers next year as it will flower on the wood made this year.
Thanks hogweed. That's just the answer I wanted
We have a Montana covering a wall about 15 feet long. 3 years ago I cut it back to 18 inches from the ground, figuring if it didn't grow back I could replace it. It came back better than ever!

I have my secateurs at the ready, Annie.
Go on, slaughter it. You know you want to.
I do oh I do!
