top soil or compost?

Hello,

My soil needs much improving, was going to put horse manure down last autumn, but still recovering from a broken ankle!
I was wondering which would be best, sacks of compost or top soil? Wonder if anyone could advise

    top soil could be no better than what you already have.  Humus in the form of compost, well rotted FYM or composted fine bark or bracken will help any soil.
