Newbie needing advice

Hi,

I am new here. I am in the middle of putting up a greenhouse 18 feet x 10 feet.

one of the sides ( left hand side end of greenhouse) will be facing not too far from our neighbours garden.  husband has brought up the suggestion of using fence panelling wood to go in that end so that when the neighbours mow glass wouldn't get broke and then we don't have to worry too much about their kids playing.... it will also mean I won't be able to see into their garden and they won't be able to see into the greenhouse ( privacy). We used to have a brown fence their but took it down when we started doing the project.

i guess my question is would using fence wooden panels on this end be ok rather than glass? the rest of the greenhouse will be glass. We haven't done this before and this is our first greenhouse so just putting the feelers out about this in case there are any burning NO's! Lol.

thank you in advance and look forward to your answers.

I wouldn't use fence panels instead of glass absolutely not - it would impact badly on light quality, insulation etc......... just put a new fence up.

Hello carlythelke. You will have to think about the sunlight and whether a wooden end might shade too much. I have an 8x8 greenhouse but the glass is toughened so no breakage worries. Have you checked your glazing to see if it is toughened. To be honest, once you get all your plants in the greenhouse, you will be surprised at how much privacy you will get. Especially when you use shading in the hot weather and bubble wrap in the cold weather. I would be tempted to replace the fence - unless you need the room and that should afford you some privacy. Do that rather than put a wooden end into the greenhouse.

  • How about a plastic Perspex for that end? We are thinking of having a hot house within the greenhouse. Maybe 3feet out from that end.

You could try perspex for that end if you are worried about breakage but it does not transmit light as well as glass does even when new.

  • I'm not worried about the light.... the other 3 sides are the major light traps.... I think if anything we will have trouble keeping it cool.

My vote would be for putting the fence back up as well. Unless of course you haven't built the greenhouse on the boundary line?

  • Oh sorry, there is a fence but it is a chai link fence and we put our own wooden fencing up for privacy
