Weed ID and treatment

Dear All,

I'm sure the weed in the picture is quite common, although I don't know it's name. Does anyone have any advice how to get rid of it.

It's a thistle - in the absence of Winnie the Pooh's friend Eeyore, get a garden fork, insert it a couple of inches away from the centre of the plant and as deep as you can and levering gently, ease it out of the ground trying not to break it's long tap root which may regrow if left in the ground. If the soil is very dry tip a bucket full of water over it the day before to soften the soil.

Alternatively give it it a shot of Roundup Spray.

easy enough to remove, seeds blow on the wind. Waste of weedkiller which has effects on all sorts of things.

I gave up weedkillers several years ago and can't say I've noticed any difference in the number of weeds about the place. They come back whatever you do.

  • Thanks for that, thought it was a thistle but not certain.
