September 2016 I was given a Vriesea as a present.

The flower faded and died so I cut it out.

Apparently "pups" are supposed to come from the base of the plant.  

the base of the plant is quite scaly and no pups have arrived and the leaves seem to be going slightly brown and blotchy.

Should I throw this away now or stick with it.

    Maggie, if your plant hasn't produced any so called 'pups' then sadly it is finished and should be just thrown away.
