Please help identify this self seeded plant

image

Please help me identify this plant which has appeared in my garden. My husband had been lovingly weeding around it as I have been unable to do so for a while, but it's not something I've planted!

it has woody stems about 1cm at base, and some rather nasty thorns on lower stems. New growth is tinged red then quickly turns green & its shot up to about 3 feet tall this spring  Not sure if it's a tree or shrub

any suggestions gratefully received!

It looks like a young hawthorn to me.  The birds plant them.

  • Happy to leave it in place if I can keep it under control - garden is pretty small & ftom what I've seen online these can get quite big?

I would remove it myself. They can be pruned as hard as you like, but it is not a particularly pretty shrub and there are plenty of them in the hedgerows already so not even rare.

  • Thanks for the advice,  now  to get past those thorns...
