ground elder. Nightmare.

Well, organic types say dig up every single scrap of roots. ( every bit will regrow ) IMHO, you'll be doing it forever.
Non organic types would leave it to establish a decent cover of leaves, then spray with glyphosate.
Your garden, your choice.
